Events in Kuching
Several annual events take place in Kuching and are well-attended by locals and tourists alike. Calendars of monthly events are available on tourism websites and at local offices, so don't forget to have a look at the upcoming events before you fly. Here is a selection of our favourites:
Christmas Parade (December)
The annual Christmas parade attracts visitors from all around the world. It is a Christian event which is organised by the Methodist Church and has been held in the city TWce 2007. The event features vendors, floats, events and music and is enjoyed by more than 6000 visitors and 10 000 participants. Each year members of several Christian churches and visitors flock to the MBKS Jubilee Ground and Methodist Church to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
The Rainforest World Music Festival
This annual festival takes place mid-year in the city. Here you can become acquainted with indigenous musicians from Borneo, other Malaysian islands and countless other countries. All festival goers come together for interactive sessions, jamming, mini concerts and evening performances. Food, drinks, crafts, and souvenirs are all on sale at the festival. The festival can be found in the Borneo jungle and lasts just over three days.
Chinese New Year (January or February)
Due to the large Chinese community living in the city, the Chinese New Year celebrations are widely celebrated in January or February each year. See for yourself the banquets of noodles and dumplings, with dragon dances and firecrackers for entertainment. Keep an eye out for the lucky red envelopes handed out to children too.
The Kuching Festival (August)
The annual Kuching Festival is held in August each year to help boost the tourism and food industry. Various events are showcased throughout the month of August including dramatic performances, concerts, art exhibitions and a writing competition.
